The oil and gas sector in the Northeast Alberta Information Hub Ltd. region has been well established since the 1950’s. It is comprised of two sub-sectors: oil and gas producers and oil and gas service companies. There are over 300 oil and gas producing companies active within the Hub region. These include major international companies such as Imperial Oil and Husky Oil. There are almost 1000 oil service companies located with the area that provide a full range of services.

One of the major energy projects in the area is the Husky Oil Upgrader in Lloydminster. This Upgrader has the design capacity to produce 54,000 barrels of synthetic crude oil and diluent per stream day and employs 315 people. An additional major project is with Imperial Oil located in the Bonnyville/Cold Lake area. In June 2002, Imperial Oil announced a 1 billion dollar expansion.

Regional Advantages

Northeast Alberta Information Hub Ltd. is fortunate to be located on one of the largest oil and gas reserves in Alberta. This reserve has an extended life. As further expertise is developed to enhance recovery methods, there will be an even stronger security for the oil and gas sector in the region.

Local Expertise

Over the past half century, a local expertise in oil and gas production and servicing has developed. The post-secondary institutes in the area continue to offer state of the art courses and upgrading opportunities to companies involved in this sector.

Many of the companies in the oil and gas sector have developed expertise that is utilized in the Hub region and in the global marketplace.
